Timelessness; It's what makes a contemporary film an instant classic. The Classic movies today belong to Marvel Studios and Disney. The ingredient of Timelessness is what The Goodbye Girl is about. Two unlikely people connect and find they can't do without each other. The tale is as old as time itself and yet here's a late 1970's flick that my kids (they're young adults) find enjoyable.
The reason some of the chick flicks of today will never hold a candle to The Goodbye Girl is because they serve up Timelessness and it tastes like 'old hat'.
So it's not just the story; it's how it is told. If you have never seen the Goodbye Girl, treat yourself to Love in New York City, 1970' s style - It will be like you were there.

Don't say "goodbye" to this gem!

This is the original "Goodbye Girl", with Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason in the lead roles. I am not a big fan of "chick flicks", but this is a very well-written story with plenty of humor and drama. I also like the "feel" of late 70's New York City when the story takes place. Still holds up as one of the best romances ever!

Probably the best romance film ever made after Casablanca! Truly a treasure and still holds up wonderfully! Dreyfus won the Oscar for this performance and it is strange to see him working this hard for the camera. Having played a believable Dick Cheney in W. to see him here as a young upstart is great. Wonderful Classic Film of a Dancer/Daughter- Actor & Their Friendships

Wonderful Classic! Love, Love love it! A Dancer-Mother is suddenly Dumped by her actor boyfriend. Richard unknowingly rents the apartment The Dancer and her daughter are in. Worth it for the title track at the end of the movie alone

One of the most heartfelt and original love stories of the the 70's. Simply stellar acting by Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason and especially the child actress, Quinn Cummings.

Life in the city doesn't get portrayed more accurately than this story, and it is a great one. Filmed on location in NYC, it has the best scenes and acting that make this a classic, and any attempt at a remake will always be secondary to this classic.Read full review...
