The Goodies - A piece of history

It's a shame that the Goodies have been so neglected over the years. The videos available on VHS were limited and in some cases deleted. Other than repeats of 'The Goodies and the Beanstalk' it was rare to get any real opportunity to watch a what had been a groundbreaking TV show. The only real contemporaries that the Goodies had on TV in that period would be Monty Python's Flying Circus.

So I was pleased to see that the Goodies were to be getting a release on DVD, even if only selected episodes. There are 8 episodes on this, the second DVD release, plus a few little extras including an interesting booklet giving some details of the background to the episodes.

In some ways the content has not aged well. The episode about South Africa could not possibly be made in today's PC climate. But it is refreshing to see the way particular issues could be handled, using words that would now be taboo but could in those days be aired without causing offence to the majority of viewers.

There is a danger of nostalgia kicking in and memories bearing no relation to what the actual programs were like. I think 3 of these 8 episodes were previously released on VHS, the rest I could not have seen since the 70s. I really don't remember those other episodes but I do remember some of the adverts that the Goodies inserted half-way through the program. Those are scenes that have stuck in my mind for 30 years or more (and it's worrying to think just how long ago these were broadcast - a reminder of our march towards the grave).

One false memory I had was that Graeme Garden was the straight man. The three players always played basically the same characters; Bill Oddie, the scruffy rebel; Tim Brooke-Taylor, the upper class twit; and Graeme Garden, the eccentric genius. But Garden was a major writer in this and other shows (the 'I'm Sorrys' for instance) and he is not so much the straight man, as the deadpan actor. It is very sad that these three were so marginalised after the end of the Goodies, in eactly the way that the Python team weren't.

So the real question is 'is the DVD any good?' I think for Goodies fans it provides a worthwhile testament to their talents but would not have a great appeal to later generations, who would find much of the content rather tame. It's worth watching more than once but probably not something for regular viewing. In terms of value you're only getting 8 episodes on 2 discs. If you pay full price in the shops that would be rather steep.

But what is ebay for, if not to give something a try at a bargain price and pass it on if you don't like it. The proof of the pudding is in the eating and personally, I shall be holding on to my copy for a while yet!

A 2nd portion of - The Goodies DVD 2005

I can remember waiting for these to come on the Tv when I was a kid! Which is enough of a reason to buy a copy I suppose.
These are copies of the programs that went out many years ago, and while the jokes are now dated, the "fun" that it was all meant to be and not to be taken as serious still shows through. The sketches are still way over the top, and typical of the old 70s 80s era - A good, BBC comedy.
Although some of the wording may offend those who are politically correct to-day!

An interesting extra is a short prog about how they treated the old stored films from the rough state they were in to the clean digital copies we now view. Some of the improvements have to be seen to be believed - and leaves one with the question that considering how popular the goodies were, why did the BBC allow these films to get into such a bad state?

The Goodies - At Last A Second Helping (DVD 2005)

A real trip back to the past, when "The Goodies" was the highlight of the week's TV viewing not just for me, but the whole family. Good clean fun, still funny after all these years. Great to catch up with a couple of episodes I never saw! Loved it; still got two of episodes to watch, and really looking forward to watching them. I know I won't be disappointed. An excellent buy for anybody who enjoyed The Goodies years ago.Read full review...
