Book 2 of the successful epic fantasy sets the scene for the rest of the series

Book 2 starts with a bit of a reset for Rand, who ended Book 1 as almost a demi-god. Here, his humble origins are initially reemphasised, and Lan helps him learn the sword and court etiquette. This book really sets the scene for the remainder of the series, explaining Rand's birth and destiny, as well as the Aes Sedai court and its factions. We are introduced to an army from over the sea, the Aiel, the cities of Illian and Cairhien, and more is explained about the Children of the Light.

As with most of the books, the plot is driven by the two factors of a quest and a battle with one of the powerful Foresaken, who are gradually emerging from their age-long imprisonment. Here, the quest is the `Great Hunt' of the title, which is initially a chase after a band of trollocs, who have stolen the Horn of Valere.

Book 2 possibly has the highest gore factor in the series, and could probably have used a more ruthless editor in places. Also, some aspects of the Aes Sedai could upset a feminist reader. However, the uncomfortable echoes of Lord of the Rings in Book 1 are mostly absent now, and the fascinating world Jordan creates is more fully his own.

Book has different cover, good quality

The book that I have received has a different cover than on the picture (so it doesn't fit in my collection). The quality of the product is good though.
I would recommend the series to all fantasy fans, it is truly an epic journey and a wonderfully built world. Read full review...
