One Real Standout In This CD!!

Eventually a successful recording artist makes one or more 'greatest hits' compilations, and Faith Hill is no exception. She's been making records since the early 1990s and has ridden the temperamental wave of country music stardom with considerable class. At forty, and with her voice sounding better than ever, she appears to seek out more and more challenge and content in her song selections and arrangements than when she began. This path has not endeared her to her original country fans, and words like 'sellout' and 'glamourpuss' littered reviews of earlier CDs "Cry" and "Fireflies". Nevertheless, she remains a force to be reckoned with, and that voice grabs onto a song and soars until you can't imagine anyone else singing that song, ever. This compilation contains hits from early on, as well as more recent and lesser known like 'Red Umbrella', but in my opinion the best cut on the record is a wrenching version of her earlier cut, 'Stronger.' The original was gentler and more introspective; this live cut makes you feel the loss. She can handle tough melodies, gritty lyrics and heartbreaking songs about loving and losing, and this arrangement is much more suited to the song than was the original. It's a good CD to have as a partial catalog of her best sellers, and its inclusion of the remade 'Stronger' was a real good idea. Perhaps it's an idea that should take the form of another entire CD for Faith - live, recrafted remakes of previous hits. There's a lot of good material there that would benefit from new arrangements and all the emotion she can pour into them.
