The REAL Boxset
Don't know why it took me so long to get these extended editions but, now that I was ready to buy them I realized that almost no one had the boxset with the heavy cardboard and magnetic closure with the map on the foldout like the LOTR ext. ed. boxset. So, I went on the hunt for the one I wanted, all the others are in just a cheap cardboard sleeve and I did NOT want to have to buy that set, I wanted it to match my LOTR set because I love these movies.
When I found this set, it looked very much like it was the one I was after and when it got here I was very pleased to see I was right.
I haven't had a chance to watch them yet because we're getting ready to set up a new entertainment system with a 4k tv and Onkyo surround system so, I'm waiting for that to be done first. Can't wait to see these, when I first saw the LOTR ext. ed. it was like seeing them for the first time again.
I'm sure there won't be any issue with these playing just fine, the set arrived in perfect condition and the discs look perfect.
If you're looking for what I was I was looking for, you've found it!Read full review

Hobbit extended edition
As with the Lord of the Rings the extended edition fills out the story better then the theatrical version. This set is also blue ray . Although used it was in mint condition and cost me about what the theatrical set in regular format cost at Walmart. Good movies and a great price.Read full review

Excellent production - packaging could be better
The extended versions of the three Hobbit movies are excellent - especially "An Unexpected Journey." While some of the material is "Lord of the Rings" rehashed (and not as Tolkien wrote his original story), it is nevertheless a faithful adaptation and very well done - dramatic and beautiful to watch. There are a few pacing issues, given how long the movies are - but they are relatively minor. The extended material is most welcome. Also, I find that the three films only get better with repeated viewing. What disappointed me most is the packaging of the Blu-ray discs. It's beautiful, but cheap plastic. All three movie discs had detached from their platters when I opened it, with one of the spindles already broken. The set also lacks a guidebook to explain the contents of the nine discs. Seems like a poor effort compared with the Lord of the Rings DVDs. Fortunately, picture and sound, while not quite reference quality, are not poor efforts at all.Read full review

Great Addition to Collection
Physically, the product is great. Nine discs worth a greatness. The movies are (in my opinion) great. Certainly not as good as the LOTR trilogy, but great in their own way. And they are greatly enhanced by the additional special features. Read full review

1st disc of Battle of 5 Armies was scratched, but we tested it and it seems to run fine. Thank you. Great set. We love this story.

Three great movies
This is a great companion to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although it doesn't follow the book precisely, it is entertaining and exciting. The acting is great. I especially enjoyed these extended versions with the additional scenes.Read full review

Better than the theatrical versions!
This is a great box set. Somehow the extended versions seem to flow better than the shorter theatrical versions. The blu rays are in just regular cases but the box they come in is nice and looks good next to the lord of the rings box I have. Read full review

CGI galore
Do you like beards? Of course you do, everyone does. Do you like dragons with menacing, English accents? Well if you like both, squander a day spent in Peter Jackson's vision of J R R Tolkien's world where a bunch of dwarves, a wizard, and a humble hobbit cross Middle Earth to reclaim the dwarves' ancestral mountain home from an evil, fire breathing, trespassing dragon. Fans of the original novel will have to forgive some liberties taken with the plot, like a protracted, CGI laden battle. But Jackson remains true to the spirit of the beloved novel, and nicely ties this trilogy to his previous, Oscar winning, Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. Read full review
