One of the best…
"The Long Good Friday" is one of the best British gangster movies, if not from anywhere. One added bonus is that it really established Bob Hoskins as a powerful leading character. His portrayal of Harold Shands, boss of the London underworld, is equal to anything done by Bogart, De Niro, Cagney, Pesci, Edward G. Robinson, Pacino - anyone you could name.
This isn’t a gentle film - it doesn’t conceal the violence of the London underworld, but it doesn’t do so gratuitously. It’s been said that George Harrison, whose company produced the movie, disapproved of the brutality, but by then it was too late.
Helen Mirren plays Hoskins' wife. Far from being a typical gangster's moll, she compliments his role as boss to a degree rarely seen in this sort of movie. She’s sophisticated, highly intelligent, not to mention quite beautiful without having to resort to overt sexuality.
Many gangster movies made in the UK have followed, but "The Long Good Friday" is a trailblazer, and remains at the top of the genre…Read full review

Need subtitles, so Criterion in future...
Great film, amazing writing, directing, acting. Bob Hoskins always great (Mona Lisa also). Have to say, though, that oh-so-cheesy soundtrack ALMOST ruined it for me, but thankfully it only lasts for maybe 15 min. (mostly in intro). Very glad I toughed thru it to end of film. WOW. Intense, not too graphic of violence, minimal language. Getting older, so am missing subtitles/captions for this ''Explosive Special Edition' (which despite Anchor Bay's stating so on case back, does NOT have). How much I liked? Will get Criterion blu once price lowers (which has subtitles, also includes 90 min. Handmade Films doc, which am interested in too, 2 films then for 1?) Read full review

Only because this wretched website insists a title is necessary
The final scene is memorable; Bob Hoskins, without any dialogue, really shows a lot of emotions ranging from surprise to acceptance of his fate.
