Excellent story line full of intrigue and trickery

Had first seeen this story when it showed on TV sometime ago. Storyline is intriguing and entertaining, Ian McShane is very good as the leading "Baddy", whilst the other actors are also very good in their respective parts. How DID they manage to build a church that size at that time with the limited resources and skillls available.? If you look at the medieval Cathedrals that we have today they were talented.

Well worth the monies paid to now be able to watch whenever and to have it in my DVD Library.

Top class, high budget medieval drama about the 12th cenury English Anarchy.

This is a high-budget English-Austrian-Hungarian production, adapting Follett's book about the English Anarchy of the 1130s & 40s. We see an almost complete spectrum of medieval life: Genuine medieval castles, high class CG graphics for various stages of cathedral building, and decent cavalry battles. Conniving monarchs, bishops, & priors, politicking & ruthless nobles, and a clash of Christianity with witchcraft. At the lower levels, there is the life of the monastery, the vision & craftsmanship of master masons & sculptors, and the English wool trade. Fortunately, the dramatist has toned down many of the anachronistic Blairite tendancies of the original book, though we are still left without a main character to represent the true piety of the 12th century.

The cast, the direction, the editing, and the plotting are all top-notch, and the drama holds its own against the best American tv productions of the last dozen years. McShane & MacFadyen lead the cast as rival clerics, while Redmayne & Atwell make an attractive and talented young couple. An almost complete success. 9/10

I have read the books, Ken Follett is a brilliant writer gripping from start to finish. I had watched the original series on tv and read the books afterwards and wanted to rewatch what is a superb series.Read full review

Game of thrones like.

Just finished reading the marvellous book by Ken Follett, and was exited to see the dvd, which obviously condenses the book.
I was fascinated to see how it follows the story and see the differences. Great value and would highly recommend the dvd.Read full review
