An extraordinary book

It has been beautifully translated from the Spanish. There is dark and wry humour throughout, and the plot maintains a page turning pace. It was so good, I read it twice in quick succession. It also awakened my interest in the causes of the Spanish Civil War, something I vaguely knew about, but having read this book, I needed to know more. It was a dreadful war, and civil wars are all the more terrible as they are neighbour against neighbour. The book gives you an insight into the ramifications of the suffering of the spanish who endured this period in their history. Don't get me wrong though, there are many light moments and good times had by the characters who seem very real in this book. The author is capable of conveying much with few words, and I think that's what I really loved about this book - no flowery descriptions, but he creates atmosphere with great succinctness. Fabulous.Read full review...
