Classic british scifi

The first tv series was transmitted live and only opening episode recorded - a fly crawled over the monitor they were filming so they didn't bother recording the rest!

The 2nd tv series exists and is good but the finale bit underwhelming as budget appeared to have run out.

The films are good and also of their time which is no bad thing. Nigel Kneale did not like Brian Donlevy who was better known as a gangster actor and it is a bit jarring to have an American running the British Rocket Group, but it doesn't take too much aware. Many familiar british actors of the time make up for this.

Classic British Sci-fi

The 1950s was a great time for sci-fi fans as outer space became more of a reality with the push to explore what was out there.
The Quatermas Xperiment is one such as the first men in space return to Earth but what happened to them out there and why are two missing. The film builds towards a final confrontation between what returned and Quatermas. A solid British film with a terrific performance from Jack Warner as the down to earth policeman and Brian Donlevy as the obsessed scientist, a must watch film.
Quatermas 2 is my favourite of the two, not only has the invasion of Earth been going on for a while but it has support in high places due to how they invade.
Quatermas and a select few trusted individuals end up doing battle on their own. Again the tension builds as more is revealed, the outside shots add realism to the whole thing and again I would highly recommend.

Good, but could have been great

Although not as good as Quatermass and the Pit, the scripts of Q1 and Q2 are still well done. The films are taut, move along nicely, and only fall apart a little at the end.

The poorest element, alas, is Brian Donlevy, who plays the film version of Quatermass as an arrogant, insensitive authoritarian figure, completely at odds with the original TV version. (Thankfully, Andrew Keir would replace Donlevy in Q3, and he does a much better job).Read full review...

Well worth watching

Brian Donlevy becomes far more human in the second film of this double bill, after behaving generally badly in the first. Both are excellent films, with really creepy moments. I recommend this film unreservedly.Read full review...

Loved it. Primitive special effects of the time but compelling direction.

I love these old hard-to-find-on-dvd movies. Unlike so many that were transferred from poor quality videos this one was as sharp as the original film. Somehow it revived the nostalgia for better times when we had greater hopes for the world without the hype, cynicism and self-interest that mars the quality of life today. Technology has leapt forward since the days of "Quatermass" but unfortunately the human race has failed to improve in line with it. Somehow this film harks back to the days when hope and faith in a better world was the over riding goal of scientists like Professor Quatermass. Interesting thing about it is the way it portrays politicians as being very protective of their own interests. Some things never change ehh??Read full review...
