simple, sweet story
Jennifer Jones is incandescent in her portrayal of a young simple village girl who has a vision. She stays steadfast in her beliefs, in spite of opposition from almost every one. It is a bit stilted, but so believable in performances (Vincent Price, as a cynic, is wonderful). One is caught up in the unfolding events, and even if one doesn't want to believe, it is compelling. I just love this amazing true story movie "The Song of Bernadette"..I've watched this movie on VHS, and I can't get my VCR to play it on my tv..It plays but no picture on tv..All I know is that every time i watch this magnificent movie, even if it is in black and white, I am moved by the credible acting ability of Jennifer Jones who was introduced as the first time actress on this movie. I always cry with this movie and I just love watching it, and it is uplifting and inspirational, and heartbreaking.

The Blessed Virgin Mary appears to St. Bernadette in a Grotto in Lourdes, France
‘The Song of Bernadette’ is a classic and my favorite Catholic movie. I have seen the movie multiple times because the movie is so deeply moving, spiritually uplifting, and beautifully told. This movie surely is a “Must See” for any Christian who has devotion to the Blessed Mother.
Jennifer Jones won a much-deserved Oscar for her performance as St. Bernadette. She was very convincing as the innocent child who sees the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Grotto of Lourdes in France.
The music soundtrack was specially made for the movie and is very beautifully orchestrated, especially right before the Blessed Mother appears to St. Bernadette in the Grotto. The lush, beautiful music really adds to the enjoyment and spiritually of the movie.
I can go on and on singing the praises of ‘The Song of Bernadette’, but I believe you get the point and will thoroughly enjoy this movie. Without a doubt, this would be a wonderful movie to watch with your entire family!

Four Oscars for this 1943 production of the events of 1858 in Lourdes, France. Young peasant girl Bernadette saw a series of Marian visions in Lourdes, France in 1858. She was subsequently beatified, then canonized, by the Roman Catholic church. Contemporaneously, there was considerable debate as to whether or not her vision was genuine. But ultimately, for those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is sufficient.
No color. No special effects. No pyrotechnics. Just superb acting by Jones, and a young Vincent Price.
Believer or not, the story is compelling, as is Jennifer Jones' portrayal.
Highly recommended.
