From Russia With Love It Isn't!

I think Jason Connery must have done this whole film tongue in cheek! The story itself is good, the acting a little ham-ish, but when you look at the sets and the budget it fits in nicely! Maybe the director was going for 'gritty' and just missed a bit.

Having said that, the film was so 80s that it did make me feel almost a little nostalgic. The big hair, the lip liner and shoulder pads all made me dream of Bananarama. The fact that the femail lead was apparently working as a translator of pornography, that her flatmate planned to marry for money, and the child downstairs had some form of lung problem all seemed to have no bearing on the story, simply being there as some mysterious mandatory requirement of any 80s film!

The dodgy Russian accents were quite funny, as were the emotional scenes. And the cliche of the Russian madame in charge of the passion wagon (literally)was a wonderful character.

If you are a huge fan of Russian scenery or history, besotted with Jason Connery, or interested in how the old rolling stock of the USSR has been converted into brothels, then you'll enjoy this film. If not, you may not feel the need to lament the lost hour of your life you spent watching it, but it is doubtful it will amke it into your top ten films of all time!
