A Serious Take On Ghostly Happenings In A Big, Haunted House By The Sea.

Here's a realistic, haunted house film from old Hollywood. It's actually scary and treats the horror aspect of spirits kind of seriously. The ghostly effects are very good and the story is complex but entertaining, all the way through. Ray Milland is in his element here with supernatural happenings revolving around a mysterious family tragedy and its effects on a big house by the sea. All good viewing and I can recommend this one for all, classic movie fans out there, especially if they like the spooky stuff. This CRITERION copy is very good in sound and video quality.Read full review

Pretty Good

I love old movies, especially thrillers. I had read a review of The Uninvited and was excited to watch it. The story line is expected, the haunted house and the quest to find out the ghost's story, but I found the movie had a lightheartedness to it that, for me, took away from what could have been a really scary movie. It was a nice movie, good acting and scenery, your sort of typical old movie feel, so still definitely worth watching.Read full review

One of 2 great ghost stories

I think that there are 2 great ghost stories. The Uninvited is one of them...both the female and male leads are somewhat heroic...they are more fascinated by the ghost than they are terrified. This is one of few old movies that does not depict the female lead as a stumbling and screaming pretty face. The second great ghost story is one with George C. Scott, the Changeling. That movie is an outstanding ghost story for the same reasons. Two great movies for Halloween. Read full review

Superior movie

My favorite scary movie. Ray Milland and his sister buy a haunted house and solve a mystery for a beautiful young neighbor. Beautiful set decor, fabulous cinematography, excellent acting. Nothing gruesome in this one.Read full review

A classic updated

This is, for me, the best film in the ghost genre ever made. There's no gore, no silly and unneeded effects (though the few included are brilliant, if subtle, by today's standards). This Criterion release, now digitally enhanced, comes with a booklet about the film, its stars and it's making. It's well-worth the money.
