Masterpiece

Michael Haneke is a master of films which do not end when the film ends but stay with you and inform and infuse your mind with something akin to a real life experience.
No neatly wrapped conclusions, or infact, any conclusions.
Draw what you will from each of his works - there is so much laid out for you.
The White Ribbon brings to mind Wordsworth's line "The child is the father of the man", but no rainbows here.

A good watch

Wish I had watched the documentary first and I would have got a greater understanding of the movie. All same a very good movie.

A VERY GOOD AND UNUSUAL FILM

For Haneke's admirers this is definitely 'a must' piece. For serious cinephiles too.

White Ribbon, NOT MY CUP OF TEA

Well made, well acted but, a bit boring for me. I think this is one for the real film buff. This beat the film The Drogon Tattooed girl at some film awards, I don't no why not in the same class in my opinionRead full review...

Brilliant but very disturbing film for deep thinking. Excellently crafted.

This is an excellent film in many ways. it is perfectly crafted: acting, setting, colour, music, photography, ambient, everything is superiorly balanced to communicate the tensions and emotions of the characters with great intensity. The theme is a deep penetration beyond the surface of a what seams to be a very peaceful german village full of puritanical values within the society with all its most damaging perverse consequences. Very disturbing in reality, it shows the terrible facts that the previous generations use in the name of god, religion, education, civilization, etc. upon the children. These creatures were innocent victims of the adult's believes and were treated with extreme sadism, with physical and psychological violence. Nowadays these behaviour upon children will be a crime called child abuse, and these adults will be in jail.
Is it possible that the adults of the past were really so ignorant of the damage they were inflicting? Or maybe they were just and only sadists? It is a question that is still open.

Mesmerising. 137 minutes of pure, thoughtful entertainment,

This is a very good film as one comes to expect from this director. Filmed in stunningly sharp black and white as opposed to colour, I think it conveys the atmosphere of the time, which is just prior to the first world war. Excellent.Read full review...

The White Ribbon

Enigmatic, menacing drama set in a German village on the eve of the First World War. Beneath the calm - but strict - way of life of the villagers lurks, unsuspected, malice, envy and hatred. Sinister accidents and inexplicable incidents start to happen which grow increasingly violent. Two young children are tortured, another is put in harm's way and it seems as if the villagers are being punished. The randy doctor has no answers, nor has the pastor - too busy thrashing his children - nor has the cuckolded Baron on whose estate the villagers work. An award-winning masterpiece from Michael Haneke.Read full review...
