"Great Songs with Extra Helpings"

The Magical Mystery Tour Film was released in 1967 and shown on BBC1 over the Christmas Holiday. England and the world were not quite ready for a vivid splash of surrealism on a still traditional family holiday. The product was misunderstood by many including the critics. Nowadays that opinion is almost entirely reversed.
The inspiring musical sequences were ahead of their time and stand alongside some great songs as shining examples of British "pop art".

The songs are superb starting with the opening gambit asking people to come aboard for the trip. The Fool On The Hill is one of those McCartney compositions that sits alongside Yesterday, Here There and Everywhere as superb ballads that will be loved and heard anywhere forever the world over.

Flying a cute instrumental and Blue Jay Way match each other beautifully starting with crystal clear instrumentation and ending in a swirling fog of sound.

Your Mother Should Know really could be When I'M 64 part 2 for the vaudeville timing is matchless coupled with the end scene from the movie.

The musical highlight is Lennon's downright masterful I Am The Walrus. The stunning musical scenes are a direct link to John's fertile and expansive mind, and is seen as a "hippiedom masterstroke"

Side two are the extra helpings starting with Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, Baby Your.e A Rich Man, and ending with All You Need Is Love. A superb set marked down by one start due to the booklet and story not being included..

The Beatles at their psychedelic finest.

Although this is not regarded as an official album release by The Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour covers the ground for the group's 1967 output which was not included on Sgt. Pepper and is definitely worth buying. The 'A' and 'B' sides of various singles are covered as well as songs from the film and, in truth, this is a much better running order than 1969's undercooked ' Yellow Submarine' LP.Read full review
