Good entertainment, awful historical accuracy...

The House of Tudor was an English royal dynasty that lasted 118 years, from 1485 to 1603, a period known as the Tudor period. Descended from Welsh courtier Owen Tudor and with a disputed claim on the English throne through the maternal line, the Tudors emerged from the Wars of the Roses as England's rulers.

This show is good for entertainment (with a good cast) and dreadful for historical accuracy! Too many historical inaccuracies on this one.

Bringing them to life

Although lambasted for not being 100% 'Historically Accurate" this series is a wonderful insight into the early days of Henry VIII. It certainly brings the characters to life. Personally it inspired me to read more about these times, a subject that bored me rigid when at school. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the part of 'The Lion' in unequalled style. Capturing the charisma and power of this much troubled King. In fact the casting overall is excellent, with many faces & names to watch for in the coming years. The costumes alone are simply fabulous and you can see that much care has been taken to reproduce them from paintings of the time. One to watch again and again, stunning, compelling and absorbing.Read full review...

Tudors

A very good DVD gripping tale of love betrail murder as one king changes forever Englands history in his quest for a son
Well acted by all the cast great locations gave you a feel for the time it was set in a time when a king thought he was god
This is a good insight into a dark part of our nations history although not completle fact Henry was after all a 6ft redhead but the actor is distracting enough to make you forget
Both queens are pretty there was good chemistry between Henry &Anne
I lookforward to the saga continuing in Tudors2
Well worth the money

The Tudors - Series 1

Yes, there are historical inaccuracies but don't forget this is a television dramatization of historical events, not a history lesson.
The acting, I have to say, is of a superb standard throughout.
Sam Neill who plays Cardinal Thomas Walsey is outstanding as the man who wished to be both politician and Pope. King Henry with his weaknesses & dilemmas is portrayed especially well here also. Anne Boleyn and her family members, her father in particular, are shown to be a very complex characters indeed. While Catherine of Aragon has been presented as a woman of immense dignity, strength of character and religious faith. The portrait of Sir Thomas More is also extremely well done but as to the series presentation of the Catholic Church you should decide for yourself, I offer no opinion!
The costumes, sets and lighting are all of the highest standards.
Personally, I found the much compared series "Rome" more gripping to be honest but this is well worth your time and money to view.

The Tudors reign again

For someone with a passing interest in the Tudors and Henry in particular this DVD was bought for entertainment rather than to learn about history. And it most certainly is entertaining! Its definately not one to watch with young children and simply sizzles - whilst lighting a genuine interest in the history too. It isnt meant to be historically correct (eg Henry's son dies at 3 in this rather than 17)but it is just great viewing. Well worth itRead full review...

Excellent take on the early reign of Henry VIII.

This is a fairly faithful account of the early life and reign of Henry VIII and the way he asserted his will on his subjects and ministers from starting off quite pliant and more interested in play, to determined to have his own way at all costs. There is, as always the usual poetic licence for dramatic effect but this in no way detracts from the overall story.
It is beautifully acted and the sumptuous costumes and sets really take you back to that lavish time in our history.
The characters that stood out for me were Sam Neill as Wolsey,Jeremy Northam as Sir Thomas Moore, newcomer Natalie Dormer as Ann and an excellent performance by Maria Doyle Kennedy as the wronged Queen and first wife, Katherine of Aragon.
Only downside for me was Jonathon Rhys Myers as Henry. I remember watching Keith Michel, as Henry, as a child and he was so good he has spoiled me for subsequent Henry's
I saw the whole series on TV and was gripped by it, being a big fan of all things tudor and wanted to own the series for myself to watch over and over again. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good soap opera as this one was for real.
