The Wire 1

I saw some parts of this on the telly and thought it would be good to see the whole series in the comfort of my home. There is nothing i dislike about it, it was a great series.

Probably the best in its genre ... ever

I'd known about this series for a while - have relatives in the US. However, hadn't really got round to buying it. This copy was actually a present for a friend as I have now watched four seasons of the Wire - probably in some sort of record time.

What is brilliantly unique about this series is that it tells a story as much from the side of the dealers as it does the police. So much so that you build relationships equally with characters on both sides of the law. It also concedes little to the viewing demands of our modern generation. The pace is slow (but intensely gripping), there is very little music or flashy production technique (c.f. a thousand other 'cop' series') and there are few twists.

Superbly rich in detail and authenticity, the Wire portrays Charm City (Baltimore) at its rawest state and each series, while continuing the same story whether as main or sub-plot, tackles a different aspect of the Baltimore's numerous (and often drug-related) problems.

I have never been so impressed by storytelling in this genre. This is not part of the glossy incredulous ilk such as 24, CSI, Prison Break that all gain so much more success. It is a police drama for intelligent people told and made by geniuses. I think the New York Times once said, 'If Shakespeare were alive today, he'd watch The Wire'.

Buy it, borrow it, beg it, steal it. I'm counting the days until season 5.

You MUST also watch it from the very beginning - season 1 and you can't miss any episodes - as there are story arcs that are not yet complete by the end of season 4 - allegedly the penultimate series.

Excellent show

I had never heard of the wire and only found out about it in 2011, I read some reviews and people saying it was the best show ever made so I thought I would give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. I can't say it was the best show ever made as I still think the Soprano's takes that accolade, but the first season of the wire was certainly an excellent watch and something I was hooked on instantly. You see the story unfold from a new police unit set up to watch the activities of some drug dealers and you also see the side of the criminals who go about their daily activities. The ending was a bit of anti climax to be fair, but the whole 12 episodes will keep you glued to the box wanting to know what goes on. All in all I would say this was an excellent series and I have already bought season 2 from ebay and no doubt will buy the rest of the series too.Read full review...
