The Wire Season 1

HBO are known for great television programs, with titles like Deadwood and Dexter under their considerable belt.

The Wire is perhaps the best show to come out of the HBO labs; it combines drama, intrigue, action and even romance with fantastic results, all set to the backdrop of an engrossing police investigation into the Baltimore underworld.

After watching Season 1 it is almost guaranteed that you'll be hooked and ordering the following boxsets.

Fantastic entertainment.

A previously unknown gem!

The Wire was recommended to me by a friend whose taste in TV, film etc I trust. To say I wasn't disappointed is an understatement! The characters, plotlines and camera work are all excellent. The show is set in Baltimore and follows the police's efforts to bring down a drug lord. As with all the best drama, the 'good' guys and 'bad' guys are not clearly defined in black and white but in myriad shades of grey I'm only about halfway through this first series but I will definitely be buying the remaining series, it's some of the best TV I've seen, up there with The Sopranos (and that's saying something!!)Read full review...

The Wire - The best TV show ever

I bought the first series of The Wire based on the review that said this was the best show on US TV. I was skeptical due to the high quality of current US TV whether it is The Sopranos, 24, Deadwood etc - but my skepticism was unfounded - This is simply amazing.

The Wire follows the story of McNulty and his team of detectives in Baltimore investigating a single sprawling case that plays out over the whole series. Over the course of the series it shows the investigation from both sides namely the police and criminals but blurs the lines between who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. The Wire is full of humor, pathos, excitement and poignancy where seemingly inconsequential coincidences and events lead to major outcomes changing the path of the story.

I can't recommend this enough. The best show on US TV? - Certainly.

One case where you should believe the hype.

a slow start but watch a few episodes and you will love it ; )

Unlike most television crime dramas, which neatly introduce and then solve a case all in the space of one hour, HBO's THE WIRE follows one single drug and homicide investigation throughout the length of an entire season. Centered on the drug culture of inner-city Baltimore, the series' storyline unfolds from the points of view of both the criminals lording the streets and the police officers determined to bring them down. This first season introduces detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) and his supervisor, Cedric Daniels (Lance Reddick), as they begin to pursue evidence against drug kingpin Avon Barksdale (Wood Harris). Meanwhile, Barksdale and his henchmen Stringer (Idris Elba) and Wee-Bey (Hassan Johnson) concern themselves with a rival drug dealer (Michael K. Williams) who's been cutting into their profits. THE WIRE's multifaceted approach offers a nuanced overview of every aspect of the drug trade and the complex morality of its participants.this overall is good but you need to watch 3 episodes into it then you will be hooked, enjoy ;)Read full review...

The Wire season 1

Great series. Gritty drama that is probably the best police series of all time. I like to think of it as a modern day Hill street blues. Now that is a compliment!
Wife and I have been gripped by the show since BBC 2 played all seasons back to back. EBAY price was excellent and we intend to purchase all 5 seasons, one per month. Great to know that we can always get our money back if we decide to sell.Read full review...

Another HBO Masterpiece!

Well, as a newspaper put it, you either love The Wire or you haven't seen it...
There's very little to add to what you may already know about this seminal cop drama. It was refreshing to see the battle over the Baltimore drug trade told from both the cop and pusher angles and each character is so fleshed out - there are no one-dimensional characters here. Hats off to our own Dominic West putting in a superb performance as McNulty and also Idris Elba as Stringer Bell - this country does produce fine actors/actresses! We were gripped from the very first episode and it is a slow burning series which grips you from the first to the last and is 'nicely done' as quoted by both aforementioned leads at the beginning and end of the series. We can't wait to get stuck into Series 2 but be warned; either take a couple of days off to watch this and shut yourself off from the world or your manager will be pulling you in for being late every morning - the 'I'll just watch one more episode' syndrome certainly applies here!Read full review...

awesome

I THOUGHT THE SOPRANOS COULD NEVER BE BETTERED. I WAS WRONG!

REALISM BEYOND ANYTHING EVER SEEN ON TELEVISION BEFORE

THE AMERICAN POLICE FINALLY ARE SCRUTINIZED RATHER THAN GLORIFIED IN THIS ACCOUNT OF SYSTEMIC FAILURE IN A POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT.
MORE A PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE CITY THAN POLICE DRAMA THIS SERIES UNCOVERS THE INNER WORKINGS OF THE CITY THROUGH ALL LEVELS OF THE CHAIN OF COMMAND AND PRESENTS A GRAPHIC LOOK AT WHAT CORRUPTION AND ETHICAL IGNORANCE MEANS FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOD CHAIN.

THE ACTING IS STUNNING THROUGHOUT WITH EVERY ACTOR, FROM THE STREET DEALER TO THE CHIEF OF POLICE, ACTING IS FAULTLESS AND THE CHARACTERS CONVINCING.

SOMEHOW, DESPITE BEING A COMPLEX AND CHARACTER RICH SHOW, THE PLOT NEVER BECOMES CONFUSED NOR THE LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT WITH EACH CHARACTER WEAK.

OVERALL QUITE SIMPLY THIS IS GENIUS

A MUST WATCH FOR ANY PERSON WITH A MODICUM OF INTELLIGENCE

The Wire, Season 1

The Wire is a drama series following a single sprawling drug and murder ivnvestigation in Baltimore culiminating in a complex series of wiretaps and surveillance. It is gritty, witty, tense and engaging. The characters are well written - the good guys have their flaws and the bad guys their charms - and things aren't always as they first appear. If you haven't seen it yet, I would thoroughly recommend you give it a try.Read full review...

The Wire - Worth a Tenner?

I loved the first few episodes when I caught them on "catch-up" tv but was frustrated waiting for the remainder to be listed by Virgin; so I bought series one off Ebay.

This is a gritty, dirty, in depth look at the US police force (and, I expect, for the UK force) where honest cops are penalised and obstructed by their superiors in the apprehension of high level criminals, as those criminals are funding political and police campaigns.

Well written, well acted and thought provoking, don't watch this series if you want something you can drift through. You have to think about The Wire but it's well worth it.
