Akira Kurasawa was one of the few geniuses of world cinema. His classic films are too numerous to mention. This film is a retelling of Shakespeare's MacBeth in which we actually see Birnam Wood come to Dunsinane. Kurosawa and the Scottish Play

Imagine, if you will, that all the characters in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" have reincarnated into 16th Century feudal Japan -- the drama, the gut-wrenching angst and inner conflict conveyed through simple body gestures and carefully directed movement against a background of eerie fog with magnificent camera angles and the contrasts that black and white film format allows. The costumes and sets do their best to replicate the historical era. Simply yummy.
