Awesome game, great value

Great game! Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 strikes a perfect balance between new and old and renders the two previous entries in the series almost completely obsolete in the process.

Making a great sequel to an already successful product is a tricky endeavor, especially when you're talking about a game series that is moving from one platform to another. It would be extremely easy for a developer to stick way too close to the previous title, using the new console's power to give the game a nice graphical overhaul and pumping up the difficulty so that hard-core fans have something new to play with. On the other hand, too many changes could potentially alienate the original game's fan base by getting away from what made the previous games in the series stick out. The Neversoft and Activision team has already proved that it can do sequels right with the September 2000 release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Now, the team is releasing a new game in the series on a new console, the PlayStation 2. Thankfully, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 strikes a perfect balance between new and old and renders the two previous entries in the series almost completely obsolete in the process.

Tony Hawk's 9th game is fun, difficult, and worth a shot.

I really enjoyed Tony Hawk's Proving Ground! As a casual/hardcore gamer for 15+ years, I'd say this game is one of my biggest challenges I've ever had. First time Tony Hawk players may have difficulty with the "Amateur" level, but it becomes brutal at the "Sick" level.

This installment has all the same controls of the classic Tony Hawk Pro Skater series plus more controls and new tricks. The game physics are somewhat fantasy-based and fake, which allows for some impossible stunts.

Comparing Proving Ground to EA Games' Skate series, this game isn't as realistic, which is what I personally like about it the most. Some parts can be extremely difficult, taking advantage of the off-the-wall, impossible-to-do-in-real-life physics. Though when I play Skate, I feel the physics are TOO realistic. Another thing, I've found a few bugs in Proving Ground which are at times hard to get around, but still playable.

The story mode is a nice non-linear, choose what you want do mode. You are given multiple tasks to complete, though you can choose them anytime or just free skate. The street challenges provide some nice (and rather difficult) side-challenges to complete between story mode missions. You have the ability to rig skate ramps, rails, quarter pipes, and a huge variety of other things in the middle of the story mode, giving you lots of room for creativity. You can even rig or mod to help in the missions! Even then, this game is no cakewalk if you want to 100%. Let me say once again, this game can be DIFFICULT.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground has been overlooked and underrated since Skate appeared on the scene. Proving Ground is the 9th Tony Hawk game in the series, which most likely lost hype after so many installments. Skate, being something new and different, picked up the fame that this game could have had. If you want a more classic fantasy skater, try Proving Ground. If you prefer a more realistic skater, check out one of EA's Skate games.

Tony Hawk Proving Grounds

This game is great and lives up to the Tony Hawk game play without all of the loading screens. Though there is no single player free skate the stor is nice. u can pick from three different story angles and do them. The new nail the grab and nail the manual features in the game are great jus need to be available more in the begining of the game. There also is a guitar hero 3 demo in this game with 6 songs and multiplayer capibilities. So this game is good though it has its flaws its still good plus its fun to skate from baltimore to DC without thoes boaring loading screens!!!Read full review...

Meh, Not For Me

Presentation- The once-fresh overall style has gotten a little old. The story elements are presented better now that they're broken out, but none of them are all that interesting.

Graphics- Character models are well defined, but can look a little freaky at times. The city is quite solid, but nothing will wow you.

Sound- The soundtrack is good, though it seems to have strayed from its hardcore skating roots a fair bit and doesn't seem as natural.

Gameplay- The controls are tight and the basics can still be fun, but we've done all of this before. Many times.

Lasting Appeal- There are plenty of things to do, and getting all of the Sick goals will require plenty of practice. Online extends the length, but it's not much different than past offerings.

Overall- I wouldn't even bother with this game unless your a true Tony Hawk skater game fan, stick with SKATE.

Excellent Game!

Gameplay: 9.0
As always the controls for this game are perfect and make pulling off high scoring combos really easy. There are so many things that will keep players occupied for an extremely long time, especially when they are trying to make sure their player’s lounge is the best around.

Graphics: 8.7
Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground has a really nice look to it. The three locations where you will be skating look completely different from one another, which is good since they do in real life as well. All of the characters are have very high detail to them, even the pedestrians. The bottom line is that this is one of the best-looking Tony Hawk games that I have played.

Sound: 8.7
The Tony Hawk series has always been great at is the sound department. The developers always have the latest music, realistic sound effects, and good voiceovers and this game is no exception.

Difficulty: Medium
If you have ever played any game in this series you will feel right at home with the controls. From the minute I first booted up the game I was doing huge combos. The game really gets only as hard as you want to make it, trying to get the “sick” score out of each goal will be hard, yet just getting the normal one is easy.

Concept: 8.9
All of the new additions to this game make it a really great buy and even more fun. I really enjoyed having the ability to truly “define” how I wanted my skater to be. The Video Editing will be worth the game’s weight in gold since for those who enjoy that type of thing. Plus, if you look around hard enough you can find arcade machines that have various mini games, including the ability to play “classic Tony Hawk mode.”

Multiplayer: 8.9
Having the ability to seamlessly jump from a single player to an online multiplayer mode with up to eight players is wonderful. I also liked how whatever stat increases you make in single or multiplayer will carry on with your skater. Playing online is always very smooth and lag free, which makes playing it really great.

Overall: 8.8
Even though this year Tony Hawk series had some stiff competition from another skateboarding game, I think that it has edged out ahead and proves that this game is king of the skateboarding games, for at least one more year. There are a lot of things that will keep you occupied for months on end, without even going that in-depth with the “career” mode. If you are a fan of this series then picking up this game is a no-brainer.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

Great game, fun story mode that can be played 10238120398 times and will be different every time. Local multiplayer is alright, though not enough games in my opinion. I haven't tried the online multiplayer, but there are some cool games on it and I'd love to try it. The only slightly bad things about this game are nail the trick mode and rigging, but its a great game nonetheless.Read full review...

Lacking fun!

This game goes away from the direction it was heading in previous Tony Hawk games. They have gotten away from a lot of the features like running off your board and easily speeding up you character. Making you work harder to pull off moves just causes frustration to complete the task, and teaches you to never use the trick again. How could a game go from Great game (Project 8), to worst game ever of the franchise(Proving Ground). Project 8 was a great game, but Proving Ground lost with me. Now it makes a perfect coaster for my beverages.

Controls = terrible

Game Play = nothing Special and took away from previous games

Graphics for an HD console = boo

The only way you should get this game is if someone would pay you to take it off his/her hands.

Another Great Tony Hawk Game

I love the layout of the game, choosing career paths and environment. I like how in Tony Hawk games there are ramps pretty much everywhere in any level and I enjoy the craziness of tricks you can perform. That said... I also enjoy realistic aspects like the "Nail The Trick" mode where you fully control the board(technical movements like Skate 2). At no point in the game do i lose interest or become bored.Has the best of mix of Fantasy/Fun and Realism.Read full review...

Great game for less money!

You can't compare this game to skate by EA because it's so different at many level. THPG is more arcade and less realistic than skate but it's very fun and there is much more tricks to do in that game than any skate games... Gameplay it's much similar to any tony hawk's but still a very nice game! I woul recommend this product to any skateboard game fan!Read full review...
