The top HD-DVD player

Although the format is now dead, there are still quite a few folk who have HD-DVDs, myself included. My Xbox 360 HD-DVD player stopped reading discs, so I opted to buy a player. I have got a bluray player, so this was just a purchase of fancy more than necessity. After research the Toshiba HD-XE1 turns out to be the top end player amongst any. It is extremely well built: weighty, full 430mm width with a very good finish. The player takes about 30 seconds to boot into a disc after loading it, and plays beautifully.

There are a myriad of connections on the back covering HDMI, component and composite video. Audio allows stereo as well as 5.1 output. Speaker distances and size can be adjusted in the setting if you are connecting directly to a speaker set and not via an AV receiver.

The remote control is very well built being meta cased. It has backlit buttons to make operating in the dark easier.

It's a shame HD-DVD got knocked out by Blu-ray, I find the Blu-ray menus not as intuitive to use as the HD-DVD ones. It just seems a better system to use.Read full review

A Tank of hd dvd player. Top quality

Best hd dvd player I owned so far. It’s built like a tank and beautiful picture. I have compared certain movies and they definetly look better than the blu ray version. I found blu ray too grainy. Remote control is great as well. It has that metalic feel finish. I collect hd dvd’s and this player is the best one to have. Read full review
