Alison Weir says it much better than I can, search for "Book of a lifetime, Norah Lofts" in The Independent where she writes a really good piece about this trilogy.
I've read lots of her books since this and would also recommend "The Wayside Tavern" and "The Suffolk Trilogy". Read full review
