awesome

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.Read full review...

classic western

still worth buying hd dvd, i think so . same quality as blu ray but at a tenth of the price ! even now no longer in production theres still about 800 titles available, which is plenty enough to fill a few dvd racks in my front room.. also you can get a good quality player for next to nothing these days. the film itself is tops for a western, westerns dont get made in any volume these days what with competition from big brash blockbusters but with clint at the helm and a cast of top actors, gene hackman is good in every thing he has ever made and its allways good to see richard harris on screen....its nice to see a cast in the latter years of there careers doing what they do best..a great film !! cant beleive it was made in 92, but it did win 4 academy awards... says it all really. akRead full review...

Unforgiven

With such a pedigree of classic western films behind him you’d expect that by the time Clint Eastwood got around to both staring and directing one it would be of a pretty high standard and certainly this epic masterpiece is a brilliant film.
Like all western films should be, the plot idea is extremely simple, a story of righted wrongs and close shaves with the law makes this an extremely captivating film and ensures that the film gets the viewers close attention for the complete duration.

The small town of Big Whiskey isn’t the most attractive place in Wyoming and certainly for the town’s small population of prostitutes it’s a dangerous place especially for the poor girl whose face is terribly slashed and scarred for a visiting cowboy. The other bar girls club together their meagre resources and put up a bounty on the heads of the cowboy who did the dastardly deed and his companion. News of this reward filters down to a young hotshot called The Schofield Kid who although can’t see past the end of his nose plans to claim the reward, and offers the chance of a partnership to aged old time outlaw William 'Bill' Munny and his friend Ned Logan.

Who the threesome having counted on is the iron fist of Big Whiskey’s lawman Little Bill Daggett and the almost martial law that he rules the town with. Sending an outrageous outlaw called English Bob on his way is all in a day’s work for the vicious sheriff and when he hears of the price put on the cowboys’ heads he plans to do all in his power to stop anyone trying to claim that price.

The film is quite clichéd insomuch as it’s full of shadowy profiles and the jingle of spurs but it’s so well done that you instantly forgive it and just revel in the atmosphere of the whole picture. Eastwood as you would expect is at his gravely best and he’s given a great run for his money by both the warm fatherly Morgan Freeman and the evil eyed Gene Hackman. Plaudits too for young Jaimz Woolvett and Saul Rubinek who give their characters great depth.

The storyline is given great expansion by the English Bob story (Richard Harris) and the leaving of his biographer in the town gives another dimension to the storytelling.
It’s brutally violent at times but it also has its sweet and sentimental periods although it never takes the easy route out of any of these situations.

A great film and shouldn’t be missed.

Hackman gets his kicks

Almost ridiculously violent Western directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as a former nasty gunslinger making a comeback. Strong drama, well acted and photographed, is ultimately a Western nasty because of the Gene Hackman character: a sheriff who literally gets his kicks out of beating people to death. No court of law for him: just a well-aimed boot. Morgan Freeman gives one of his best performances as the Clint character's sidekick.Read full review...
