Great Album

Finally I get this album on CD - my vinyl copy is worn out.
This was Grace Jones 4th album but includes on it a cover of Chrissie Hynde's "Private Life". I can remember hearing the track for the first time at University and being blown away.

We the good news is that there is more of the same here. Roxy Music's "Love is the drug" and other songs by artists as diverse as Smokie Robinson and Tom Petty get an R&B makeover to remember. Grace Jones has a very distinctive voice and in her early days it was somewhat limited in range. She appeared to cultivate a scary sinister image and her voice on this album reflects this persona. It also helps to bring out the best in these arrangements.

However, the aspect of the album that really really gets me is the backing track. With rythms laid down by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare overlaid with intricate reggae / R&B / disco guitar and keyboards, the whole effect is definitely cool beyond cool.
