Super-Wide and Superb !

This Zeiss 12mm lens uses the famous Distagon formula to achieve excellent superwide photos for both Fuji and Sony mirrorless cameras using the APS-C sensor.
The equivalent full-frame focal length is 18mm.
Sharpness, color rendition and focus accuracy are up to typical Zeiss standards.
Although this lens is manufactured in Japan, the feel and build quality is German.
Aside from the very loose f/stop ring (which clicks in 1/3 f/stops), which many other reviewers have mentioned, I can't find fault with this lens.
The autofocus is quite fast and the auto exposure is accurate in all modes.
The manual focus ring is quite smooth and quick.
There is some edge distortion, which is typical for most high quality superwide lenses, but the results are easily corrected in post processing.
The lens hood is reversible and clicks positively into place.
I chose this lens over the 14mm Fuji because of cost and weight.
These Zeiss Touit lenses (both 12mm and 32mm) seem to go on sale frequently, so I would be careful not to buy one at the regular price.

Zeiss Quality

Background:

In my film only days, my widest lens was an 18mm f/3.5 lens that I used on my 35mm film cameras.

When I began shooting digital on Fuji APS-C mirrorless cameras, I needed a 12mm lens to give me the same angle-of-view on the APS-C cameras that the 18mm had given me on 35mm cameras.

The 12mm Zeiss f/2.8 Touit was one of the lenses I considered. Here are its pros and cons.

Pro:
Auto exposure
Auto focus and Manual focus
Maximum f/2.8 f-stop
Handles backlit subjects well
Handles flare well
Excellent image quality
Well-built
Works well with my two f/2.8 Fuji zoom lenses (16-55 and 50-140mm)
Uses same 67mm filters as my Fujinon 16mm
Useful for shooting landscapes, events, external architecture, interior architecture, vehicle interiors, astronomy, and environmental portraits

Con:
Premium price for Zeiss name and Zeiss quality
Electronic focus-by-wire focusing (I prefer mechanical focusing)
No distance scale printed on lens barrel
Not weather resistant
Plastic, petal, bayonet lens hood (I prefer metal, round, screw lens hoods)
No image stabilization
Large size

Fabulous ultra wide lens

I am extremely pleased with the image quality this lens delivers with my Fuji X-E2. Most ultra-wides are great in the center but IQ deteriorates rapidly towards the outer edges of the image. Not this lens.
Everyone complains about the aperture ring being to loose. It is. I'm surprised at Zeiss. You just have to be real mindful of that fact when you're using this lens by checking the ring itself or the f-stop displayed in the viewfinder/LCD.
Otherwise and all-around excellent lens. Distortion is very well controlled. I have used plenty of 10-12mm lenses in my profession but none have been as good as this lens in image quality & distortion control. It's a real keeper.
I highly recommend this lens!

Price the main negative

This item is good value if you watch ebay carefully. Retail not so much unless you value the Zeiss name for its own sake. The non-AF Samyang 12mm is the principle competition. It costs way, way less, but manual focus and manual aperture. Image quality isn’t significantly different especially after LR (or other software) applies lens a correction profile.
Good news is the lens has been out long enough that Ebay prices for a nice copy are getting more reasonable. That’s why I’ve decided I can upgrade from the Samyang to the Zeiss.

What You'd Expect From Zeiss

This lens is particularly good for IR photography - no hotspots. That's rare for an ultra-WA lens. It also has very good IQ in visible light.
