Very good kit, highly recommended.

I've experienced problems with LR Defender starter motors for years, normally corrosion brought on by excessive wading, and water getting into the starter motor. With a starter motor running at £100 approx for a good'un, it's an expensive hobby.
So when my latest exploit in my TD5 caused the starter motor to die, I fitted one of these kits and it worked a treat. Rather than the contacts burning, I experienced corrosion of the solenoid body and the solenoid housing, enough to prevent the solenoid flicking down.
The kit solved that - piece of cake to fit, very nicely made, in fact i couldn't see any difference between the parts and the Nippon-Denso original parts.
Highly recommended, I will now keep a starter motor on the shelf for my next dunking so I don't get caught out.

Great kit at a great price for nice and easy fix.

This kit includes all the parts needed to refurb the Starter Motor to fix the common worn contacts problem, where the starter just clicks but doesnt actually try to crank the engine. It is all high quality components and very reasonable price. Fitting once the starter motor is removed from the car is a simple job and id highly recommend this kit to anyone experiencing starter motor issues on the TD5.Read full review

Good kit - easy fix

Bought to fix the usual td5 issue. Once you manage to get the starter motor out from under the defender the is a simple job to replace the worn parts. The kit parts look good quality and are easy to fit.
Follow the simple instruction on the product page and you can't really go wrong.
All parts look identical to the parts you remove so hopefully have a starter motor that will give a lot more years work.
(The next bit is trying to get the started back in place but thats nothing to do with the kit )

Simple and effective.

I can’t see any possible negative element as to the kit and it’s parts. I’m a retired mechanic so I remember the tricky aspect of removing the starter motor. It took around an hour to fit on the driveway at home and has made an immediate difference as expected. Perhaps a consideration could be made as to ensuring the contacts are flat and level when tightened - just to give them the best chance for even erosion. This aspect may be covered in instructions which I must admit I didn’t look for or follow. I can’t compare to other kits as I have no experience of the others, all I can say is from what I’ve seen I will definitely opt for this brand in any of my future purchases.

From a metallurgical and manufacturing process I couldn’t see any visual evidence to poor quality procedures or raw materials ( ie poorly formed folds in the copper contacts or evidence of stress caused by folding which would lead to premature failure).

Definitely great value for money!

Best Td5 Starter I’ve Used

The starter repair kit from X8R is a massive improvement on the standard OEM components in the starter. It’s of perfect fit into the starter and using the kit is a joy to work with. With many kits from other places you sometimes wonder what may arrive and whether the components are correct, but with X8R I’ve always had the perfect experience and the kits come with everything you need. I’m a repeat customer and my standards are very high indeed, so that just proves that I value X8R as a business who produces very high quality products.Read full review

Td5 Starter

Fitted new battery which cured my poor starting but seemed to kill the 150k mile old starter. Looked around and chose this repair kit. Handy instructional video on X8R's YouTube to show exactly what to do. Followed video and it works as new again. They just need to make a Chassis next so my Discovery can live on😂Read full review

Good but not perfect

The worst thing about fitting this kit is removing the top nut holding the starter motor to the bellhousing. Once you've undone that everything else is simple. However, that is not the fault this repair kit, which is good but not perfect. This is where it could be improved:

1) The contact surfaces are smaller than the OE part, which leads me to suspect that it may not last as long

2) The copper flashed bolts that hold the contacts in place are short by around 5mm. I'd prefer to have a bit of thread protruding once the final nut has been tightened.

So, it's a good kit and it works, but it could be better.

Get this before replacing your starting motor

Saw this when looking for starting motors. The solenoid wears out long before the actual motor itself. My Discovery 2 was intermittently clicking on starting. Bought this product. Easy to fit. The old solenoid was well worn and probably about to give up. Saved ££££s. Definitely recommend. Fitted in situ and was awkward but if you can take a starter motor of then you can do this no problem and quite easily.
Job done, part fixed and saved money 👍

Great money saving kit.

My TD5 was becoming increasingly difficult to start and with a replacement starter motor costing a small fortune, I thought I'd try this kit.
I had previously bought an E.G.R. bypass kit from this company and was impressed with the quality of the product and the clarity of the instructions.
Anyway, the most difficult part was removing the starter motor. When I say difficult, it was only 2 mounting bolts and a couple of nuts.
The kit fitted perfectly and 20 minutes of lying under the truck the starter was back in place !
Guess what? Perfect !!
Thanks guys.
