Love my AirPort Extreme router. They're rugged and last.
Although this product is no longer being offered by Apple these routers are fast (discontinued in 2018). I have three hardwired Apple Extreme routers distributed throughout my house. The oldest, model A1521, is eight years old (they last). One is connected to the internet via a Netgear modem and two are bridged. I have Comcast one gig service so when I say fast these 802.11ac routers have download/upload speeds of 942 mbps/ 40 mbps connected to a Netgear CM2050V modem (rated at 1.2 Gbps). Apple makes it a snap with their Airport Utility App to connect them together. I plugged it in, the app recognized there was a new router and when I clicked on the new router, the app told me it had configured it as a bridged router on my network with the same login as the other two. It doesn't get easier than that! Rather than spend $500.00 on three new mesh routers from Netgear I'll spend $44 any day. BTW, the 5GHz mobile connection to these routers is 350-400 mbps (speedtest.net). The vendor that sold this to me was excellent. It was shipped promptly and it was well protected.Read full review

No frill good network.
Out of the box Apple Extreme stations work well, almost no tuning required. I use multiple of these base station to fill my house with WIFI. I now have few dead spots. Coverage is very good. Only downfall, is apple's short warranty. Had 1 unit burn out at 14 months, and no coverage from apple.Read full review

Blown away!
We have always had troubles with routers in the past, mainly because we always pick the cheaper ones at Walmart. After dealing with issues for months with our lynksis we finally decided to upgrade. I've never even considered an airport before thinking they might not work great with non apple products, but now that everyone in the house started using apple products I figured it would be a great time to try one out and I'm so glad I did. Before our average download speed was ruffly 14 mb but now we are averaging 110mb and with minimum hiccups with our non apple products. The only issue I had was getting my PS4 to signing in to the store, but by the time I got off work it was working fine without having to change anything. The setup was 10x easier than any other router I've ever used and I was able to do it straight off my iPhone with out looking at any sort of instructions. Love this rough tee and would highly recommend any one try it out as long as you have at least one apple product to set it up with. Read full review

Great Discontinued Base Stations
Excellent for Mac users and other Apple wi-fi device users. Very easy to set up and maintain a wi-fi network. The Apple MacOS component AirPort Utility makes it easy to set up an administer your network. And now the sad news:The Airport Extreme and the Airport Express are NOW DISCONTINUED! Apple has left the wi-fi equipment market. Apple will continue to support the AirPorts, I've been told by Apple Support agents. So if you want to continue your AirPort network, maybe buy an extra base station. Maybe you can get a better base station and build a stronger network with other brands' newer stuff, but you won't have the ease of using AirPort Utility.Read full review

IT has run well since the purchase - that one oddity - that was firmware needed
The Air Port Utility did the whole set up for me. The other day the light was orange and I thought it strange since it had been operating very well. It said it was over heating, but I went to the Air Port Utility and I noted that a file sharing buttomn was checked to file share and I didn't want that - I turned it off and it wanted to "update" so I clicked that to occur and after two minutes everything was good again and the light was green. I called my brother to check his Aip Port and his was orange. He said his Aip Port Utility wantred a firmware update and then his light went green after a few minutes. Strange. I think that was what my Aip Port Extreme needed, as well. I have had no glitches with this Air Port Extreme but that incident which - was a firmware update.Read full review

Great Router for somewhat "advanced" users
Overall a great router. However Apple does some Apple things that aren't "user friendly" and directed to force you into more Apple services and such.
For example, I have a WD MyCloud (nas) I use to locally backup photos from phones etc... Apple does not support UPnP so you have to manually setup port forwarding, and a static IP to get "AC" transfer speeds, others you're stuck with really crappy relay speeds which are painfully painfully slow. If you can do that, you won't have any problems. On literally any other modern router you just plug and play hence the name "universal plug and play".
The Airport Utility app works well. However you will need an iPad or PC/MAC. Initial Setup from an iPhone is buggy for whatever reason.
If all you use is Apple products you'll be fine. But Apple doesn't offer a really useful NAS, they want you to go iCloud - Mac - TimeCapsule. Which is a needless hassle when you can go from iPhone - straight to MyCloud at N/AC speeds automatically every time you come home.
Range is great and bandwidth for multiple devices is great. Bigger than I expected from photos but still good looking. Beats having external antennas all over the place.Read full review

Always trustworthy and reliable
The Apple Airport Extreme is the best WiFi router available on the market if you don't need VLAN's. It's a simple plug-n-play device. Connect the WAN port to your ISP's DSL or Cable Modem and hit the reset button the back, turn on the Airport Utility on your Mac (you did get a Mac, too right?) and it's right there, ready to be configured. In about three steps it's ready to go. Connect any wired devices to the three LAN ports and maybe a USB hard drive to the USB port and you have a full on LAN device delivering NAS services to your Mac for Time Capsule and file sharing. I've never set up an easier in-house network. Read full review

Perfect Upgrade For An Old Airport Extreme
My aging Airport Extreme was showing its age and while I wanted the faster speeds afforded by the 802.11ac in the newer model, I worried about having to set up the new network. Fortunately, there is an easy way to simply copy over all your old Airport's settings and placing them into the new one, so I had everything up and running in 10 minutes!
My only problem with this model is the lack of a USB 3.0 (Apple still uses a 2.0), but other than that, it's solid.Read full review

Wireless Coverage is Amazing
As with most Apple products, ease-of-set-up and overall use is a given. Apple's Aport Extreme is no exception. I upgraded to this model from the original Airport Extreme. It's definitely faster than the original. But, the real difference for me is coverage. We have an irregular L-shaped home with 2 levels - around 3,500 sf. Since the antennas are in the top, the new Airport Extreme has much better coverage throughout the house.Read full review

Apple is still the best
As you expect from an Apple product the airport works easily out of the box.
The range easily hits every corner of the house and the yard too. The interface for set up is easy to access from an iPad. It also delivers great Wi-Fi speeds, no lag videos to all of our devices.
After dealing with Wi-Fi setup since the beginning of Wi-Fi including working with many other brands; it is so nice to have something so easy to use.
Ten stars out of five! Apple is still the standard. Read full review

Upgrade your old Airports for increased range.
I have a several building covering a large area requiring connected base routers with extended bridge mode repeaters. I have tried mixing old AirPorts with modern famous brand routers and the setup never worked well at all and I never was able to configure bridge-mode repeaters in a mixed Apple and other brand system. There are now WiFi Mesh systems available that claim they do what Apple Airports have always done. Rather than throwing out all of my existing Airports and purchasing a whole new Mesh system, I discovered the A1521 has a much better range than the older Airport Extreme stations and intend to upgrade all of my old Airports to A1521s.Read full review
