Brother SE400 Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine

Perfect upgrade from mechanical machine and for getting started in embroidery!

I bought this because I needed more stitches than my very old machine had and I wanted basic embroidery capability. So far, I have found it to be exactly what I need. The variety of stitches available and the features (auto needle threading, auto thread cutting, etc) are such a convenience. The screen is easy to read and the machine is user-friendly. I took the time to go through the instruction manual and I keep it handy for answering questions on the numerous features. The embroidery capability is perfect for small projects and everything I have tried has stitched out beautifully. Much of the success is due to the excellent advice I have found on various sites concerning the best thread and stabilizers for different fabrics. I spent a great deal of time researching affordable sewing machines that also had embroidery function. I was concerned about the Mac compatibility, but it is not a problem. There is advice on line about how to work around this issue. I believe the SE400 is the best option for both sewing and embroidery in this price range.Read full review

I HAVE ONLY JUST GOT MY MACHINE,AND I LOVE IT.!!!!!! I THINK IT IS GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY AND HAS SOME EXCELLENT FEATURES LIKE THE AUTOMATIC NEEDLE TREADER AND AUTOMATIC TREAD CUTTER.
THE ONLY DOWNSIDE I FOUND WAS THE INSTRUTION CD THAT CAME WITH IT DIDN'T WORK AND I HAD TO FIND MY OWN WAY ROUND THE MACHINE. THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH A USING A BROTHER MACHINE AND MY FIRST TIME I HAVE TRIED USING AN EMBROIDERY MACHINE. I love this machine!

This machine is wonderful, so easy to use, does so many things. No chasing a foot pedal (unless you choose to), so many excellent features, just as described.

New machine requires some skill level

I had a bigger version of this machine that did more so I figured this one would be a snap to use. Not the case, I do like the machine but the differences in this one is taking longer to figure out. I might have been better off if I had no experience. The stitch quality is fine and the auto threader is nice. I own a Baby Lock Destiny machine, but wanted something small to travel with. It's easy to use, stitches out nicely, is light weight. Although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of my Destiny, it will serve my purposes nicely. Great machine at bargain price

I have a much older sewing machine that i have used forever. There are so many things about this machine that fascinate me. Even as simple as pushing a button to cut the thread. I have not tried the embroidery feature yet. Have never done that. But i will as soon as i master all the other standard sewing features.Read full review

Pros:
1) The best value for the money, for so many features it offers.
2) Easiest bobbin system I have seen.
3) Extremely helpful teaching aids, especially for to first-timers.
4) Built-in designs and also designs provided on the CD, 170 designs in total.
5) Automatic needle threading mechanism working as it should without any problems

Cons:
1) Small embroidery frame (10cm X 10cm)

Brother SE400 factory refurbished

Well, I wanted to try machine embroidery, do I decided to buy the refurbished machine. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It looked like a new machine. All accessories included, and the manual. Even bobbin thread. I then followed the quick guide, and could embroider a multi colour design from the machine. I am impressed.
