Delius, the last of the great British Romantics (although apparently he hated this country, & wrote virtually everything whilst abroad)

Getting a box set of any composers work, is by far the most economical way to familiarise yourself with their entire canon. As long as they're reputable recordings (& these ARE essential EMI recordings)

All the movements you'd expect, are represented here, but the vast majority of Deliuses output goes largely unplayed on the two main classical music channels in the UK. As movements in 20th century compositional style frowned upon the pastoral model favoured here & by such luminaries as Vaughan Williams. However if you like his style anyway, you wont be dissapointed, as there are many little unplayed gems on here.

There's also a fantastic lecture from Thomas Beecham, that is so stultifyingly pompous that it would put any new comers to classical music off for the rest of their lives. If your a fan though, you may find it interesting (I am, but I still find this kinda thing hilarious, but for all the wrong reasons)

Compilers of classical musical, take note..........

Just about all the missing Delius!

For the Delius Music lover here at last is the complete "Koanga", "Fennimore and Gerda", Incidental Music to "Hassan", Piano Concerto, "Song of the High Hills", as well as the "Mass of Life", "Requiem", and "Once I Passed Through a Populous City" all with complete texts. We are presented with all of the existing recordings of Delius songs - a few going back to 1929 and as recent as 1999. A large selection of his chamber music is also included as well as brief comments by his amanuensis Eric Fenby on several of the works included. When the more easily available selections are here the editors have selected hard to find versions such as Jacquelin du Pre's Cello Concerto and Menuhin's Violin Concerto and Meredith Davies "A Village Romeo and Juliet". The booklet notes by Lyndon Jenkins are helpful and without technical jargon and complete texts and translations are included on an included PDF file accessed directly from one of the 18 discs in this invaluable set. A must for any music lover enraptured by the harmonic mysteries and lovely melodies Delius's music leaves behind long after these recordings end. Wayne BernathRead full review
