Seems good

My son asked for one of these for his birthday. Having no experience of what this should sound like it seems great. The only down side so far is that it requires AA batteries, which we didn’t realise and were not included so he had to wait a couple of days to try it out. He is really pleased with it. NOT the original - a Chinese copy

Although a Chinese copy, it is better than the original in many ways:

1) Octave shifter. This extends its meagre range of 1.5 octaves somewhat.
2) Integrated circuit inside ensures it stays in tune with itself (the original relied on stability of resistors for each note, which sometimes drift). It stays in tune with other instruments once the master tune (spindle on base) has been set correctly.
3) It uses 3 x AA batteries instead of a PP3. These last longer and rechargeables can be used.
4) Looks very like the original - same size as a 60's tranny radio, so very portable.

Bad points:

1) Cheesy sound - but what do you expect! Good for a joke - like playing 'Telstar' that sounds like the Joe Meek original. Not so bad when amplified - sounds like a 60's electric organ.
2) Beware that the exposed metal parts of the headphones out and 'MP3 in' are connected to opposite poles of the battery, so you could short out the battery if you connect both at the same time (or put it sideways on a metal surface). Who needs the 'MP3 in' - which is just an audio in - so your MP3/CD player will sound awful through its tiny speaker. If you want to play along with a CD or similar, put both through a decent amplifier! I took mine apart and removed the MP3 connector completely.
3) This also relates to the original: The 'keyboard' is just an extension of the printed circuit board and so could wear out easily. I took the precaution of polishing the end of the stylus to reduce abrasive wear.
4) The packaging implies (unless you look closely) it's Dübreq, when it's actually made under licence.

So if you want to do a Bowie impersonation without paying silly money for a 1970's original, this is a good option. Even a new one is about £20 - so good value at under a tenner.

Perfect. Have attatched it to play through the minotron, put it through a fun marshall amp.. loads of mental sounds. Got no music know how yet still its jntuitive enough for the band. Yes I love Mark E Smith and the Fall but honest I'm not trying to copy them! Read full review

Great entertainment

Easy to play, with many tabs available online. Great fun and entertainment value. I purchased it for my 9 year old grand-daughter and she could play the basics within a week or so

Unlimited sounds through my guitar effect rack.

As a huge Bowie fan I totally get why he embraced the stylophone back in the day. Hugely underrated instrument. Not a toy.

You can play any tune on the go . I don't read music but if I know the tune I can play it.

Great little sound.
