Solder on.

Unusual (and interesting) to need a soldering kit, albeit a bit frustrating that after assembly it didn't ping straightaway. However, I acknowledge I am no expert solderer, and luckily the first connection I checked was the problem, so I didn't need to dismantle the kit and start again.

Great educational weekend project!

PROS:
Excellent introduction to electronic construction for my 12 year old grand-daughter, who did most of the soldering under supervision.
We built it in an afternoon and listened to the bats in the evening.
The part pre-assembled PCB with all the SMD components fitted, leaves just enough self assembly of the easier through-hole components to give a sense of achievement and the satisfaction that it was home made.
The instructions are very detailed and leave no steps out other than the battery mounting which we did with a small piece of thin double sided foam tape, attaching it to the box base directly below the speaker. They also include a full circuit diagram and description and lots of other notes about using the unit.
The construction does assume that the builder already has access to a small electronics soldering iron, small side cutters, cored solder, pliers and a small screwdriver.

Although I have given this a negative vibe, for the money it is a good little project and fun to make. Obviously it will not perform like more expensive models you can buy, but I am still a little disappointed with the results.

Doable.......... but is it worth it?

Instructions are adequate without being idiot proof. Components are very small and difficult to solder. You need to be ultra careful. The KHz are not calibrated so you have no idea of range. Needs at least 2 hours to read, figure out and assemble the components. A DIY job that is doable and enjoyable but probably not worth the effort for the money saved!.Read full review

Make your own bat detector kit

I bought this as a ‘fully assembled’ equivalent’ would have been substantially more expensive. I’m quite familiar with electronic projects, but I was impressed with the quality of the instructions and anyone should be able to assemble this with minimal electronic knowledge. After calibration using the technique in the manual, we waited until around 9:30 pm in our back garden and after only a few minutes heard (and then saw) a bat flying overhead. DIY bat detector

Minimal skills to build but a fantastic result when you turn it on for the 1st time and it works!!!!
Will fit in a large coat pocket, but remember it is a cardboard box. Still good craic.

Detecting bats

The bat detector was easy to build but you will need soldering skills. I haven’t been able to find any bats yet but testing using ultrasonics certainly works. It would be nice to have some indication of the frequency being detected (maybe a rough scale on the frequency adjustment) to get some idea of which breed is being detected
In summary, this detector represents good value for money but care should be taken to protect it as the housing is the cardboard box it cane in.Read full review
