not the remake, fortunately

more true to the original story/legend, than the remake. the Green Knight is NOT a talking tree. locations filmed were actual castles. the costumes appreared period correct and the armorer was the same as who worked on Excalibur, which can be seen in the type of plate armor used, Terry English. the only issue was the aspect ration, formatted to fit this screen, 4:3, not widescreensRead full review

More for nostalgia

I saw this movie originally when I was my son's age. He is 16 & is named Gavin after Sir Gawain, King Arthur's noblest knight. It was originally a long epic poem, has been translated by J.R.R. Tolkien from Old English into modern English & is, I believe, one of the oldest (if not the oldest) written poems. I've read it in both old & new English. Sean Connery & the rest of the cast does a good job bringing the poem to life. It is definitely dated & not for the younger generations. I prefer the classics. I love the John Carter & Conan series, the hollow earth sagas, Tarzan (the original), the Time Machine & many other classics. I read this when I was 16 & loved it so much that when my son was born in 1999 (12 years later) I named him after one of my earliest heroes. It was better than Tarzan. And even when I think back today about how every Knight in Arthur's court would not stand up to take the Green Knight's challenge, but this young squire was brave enough (today it would probably be labelled arrogant or worse) to accept it, I still dream of being there myself to live the "romantic" life. If by "romantic" you mean no running water, rampant disease & poverty, violence, death at an early age, no deodorant, toothbrushing or ANY decent hygiene or regular bathing & the loss of everything that makes are lives simpler, until I realize that I would have been one of the poor & would not have liked it for more than a week or MONTH at most. That's why I love to read about it. If you like J.R.R. Tolkien or Sean Connery, love history but not so much great acting, then you might like this movie.Read full review

Fantastic Fantasy

This film is one of the all time under rated & unfortunately best kept secret of all fantasy films. In a time when stories had to be told without CGI, the personal performances & wonderful scenes & extraordinary costumes in this story will keep you interested 'till the final moments. It's truly timeless & for all ages.Read full review

Enjoyable Knights of the Round Table tale

An enjoyable addition to the King Arthur/Knights of the Round Table stories with a terrific cast, including Sean Connery. Special effects are low-tech by today's standards, but okay for the 80's.
