Howerd's comedy and character is completely distinctive and worthy of this collection.
Frankie Howerd at his best was a master of stand-up without relying on gags but with his demeanor of a put-upon and vulnerable character. Up Pompeii as a great vehicle for his talent getting huge laughs from his part in the script but also his relationship with the audience.
The complilation DVD shows him making the most of great scripts by, among others, Galton and Simpson. Some of the humour is inevitably dated, but, never malicious.Read full review

A Hoot!
Dear old Frankie in his best role ever - Lurcio - the rest of the characters totally oblivious to his chattering asides to the audience, looks to camera, etc., with the exception perhaps of Nausius (Kerry Gardner) who occasionally ad libbed his way into the know and may well have upset Mr Howerd's control of the proceedings. Way before it's time and obviously an influence on the likes of Miranda Hart and more recently, Mrs Brown.
A bit laboured in places but that's down to the script - still a classic idea and fondly remembered today. I look forward to the forthcoming remake episode although with reservations having seen the similar attempt at Are You Being Served?Read full review
