Beautiful thoughts and illustrations of nature and life

A beautiful book of words and illustrations of the natural world. Huge size on the large pages. Difficult to place (children, adults?) both - but a 'wow moment on every page. Large and 'important' feel to the book - for 3 - 10 year olds to dip into for a special treat - or can be used regularly, so long as adult in charge when they're younger.Read full review...

A great idea brought down by mediocre ilustrations

The illustrations don't need a zoologist to point to their failings. Anyone a little bit observant will see how they jar. Robert Macfarlane is fabulous and the idea of the book so good. This is what makes it a big disappointment.Read full review...

A must have book.

Absolutely beautiful. Superb and beguiling illustrations. Words accompanying the pictures revesal the authors exceptional knowledge of creatures behaviour and are better when read out loud. Still can't complete Jackdaw without laughing.Read full review...

A Very Special Inspiring Book

I was expecting a good read, and this was more of a picture book. It is especially good for looking at with children in about mid-childhood (but you'll want to turn the pages most carefully!) Absolutely gorgeous. I fell in love with every picture, many of which cover a double page. Exquisite artwork by Jackie Morris. The words and letter are interactive and grabbed the attention of the two 7 and 8 year old boys who had come to visit. Read full review...

Children's book which is equally enchanting for adults

I was captivated by this book as soon as I opened it. Written in response to the removal of many nature-related words from the Oxford Childrens Dictionary, including otter, kingfisher and barn owl, the book takes the form of poems designed by Robert MacFarlane to be read aloud alongside richly coloured illustrations by the artist Jackie Morris. I have given a copy to our local Primary School and a copy to my 86 year old mother, it really does bring joy to people of all ages.Read full review...

Compelling and thought provoking.

This book is wonderfully illustrated. The prose is compelling and thought provoking. Our grand daughter has chosen to read from it for her school talent contest. It has very special qualities suitable for all ages.Read full review...

This is such an inspiring book of poems and pictures. Lovely for grown ups even more than children, I’d say! I love my copy so much, I have bought one for my teenage grandaughter. It is a golden treasure!Read full review...

An inspirational response to a tragic dilemma!

When my copy arrived I was stunned by the quality of its production.
The beautiful illustrations take you into the journey exploring each of the "Lost Words", And the poetry of Robert Macfarlane conjurs up the timeless images that prove these words' worth.
I am buying copies for all my godchildren!

A Special Gift

Perfect for anyone with a love of nature and the magic of words, the book is large enough to show off the beautiful artwork on every page, but would have liked the book to be a little denser but still highly recommended and a great gift for all to enjoy.Read full review...
