Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett was a brilliant writer and yes I would compare him with Tolkien but on the much lighter side. His characters are great and the stories relaxing and easy to follow and as for laughs well that goes without saying. All of his books even the early children's books are worth a read by adults. We have lost a great man and author in his passing.Read full review

First Discworld novel - should be read by EVERYONE who enjoys amazingly clever and funny mythical novels. Not at all dark like Harry Potter.

FANTASTIC book by an extremely clever, original and really missed author. The first Discworld novel will transport you into an amazing world which you will want to visit again and again.

Sir Terry's books are brilliant (RIP)

I read this book way back when it first was published. I read it so much that one day 'it actually fell to pieces'. Now I have a new copy and happiness reigns in the kingdom.

The first book but you might want to start with a later one and come back

Although the first of the Discworld novels written it is more a standalone book. If you have difficulty embracing the concepts it is well worth venturing into the forums where you will likely be advised to start with one of the witches series, the town watch or just the second book The Light Fantastic which is a more fully formed story. Neverthe less it is a good book and one of the many loved by fans of Sir Terry.Read full review

Wonderful humour and imagination

A friend lent me the " witch novels " which I loved, having found my role model in granny Weatherwax. Now I'm starting with the first Disc World novel and loving it. Terry Pratchet's gentle humour shines through all his writing.Read full review

Landmark indeed in English fiction comedy

Although it starts as a fantasy parody, the Discworld created by Terry Pratchett is far more. Besides the brilliant use of English and satire, the series, which is started by this very book, is full of humanism and social criticism too. Be prepared that you will want to read what follows.Read full review

Good read.

My girlfriend got me into Terry Pratchett and we read the books together and I'm enjoying this book. I'm half way through and its fun. I'd recommend this to anyone who who like medieval style stories with a fun twist. Read full review

The first encounters in Discworld; with more SF pastiche than many of the later ones.

I'm happy to read the first Discworld book again; my original copy wore out from rereading.
