War & Peace: the Complete Miniseries (DVD, 2016)

I couldn't get through the book, so I bought the DVD

I even tried to watch the version with Audrey Hepburn, but it was too slow. I loved Tolstoys Anna Karenina, but just could never finish the book War and Peace. Now that I have seen this BBC version, I plan to read the book.
The DVD was excellent, with realistic characters (for instance, Pierre looks the way he is supposed to, dumpy and plain). The modern touches make this very entertaining, I loved it.Read full review

Exquisite set design, acting and tone. The cinematography is the only thing that seems unmotivated, but it's still so pretty! Lily James will leave you breathless. Natasha is the best character in literature in my opinion, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but it's exactly how I imagine Natasha. And Paul Dano... you'll fall in love. Great Novel, Good mini series

War and Peace is one of the great novels in world literature. The BBC mini series is good, but not great. The scenery of the mini series is excellent - Russia, Latvia,etc. The actors are very English so you really think you are watching an English movie, not a Russian one. Also it was hard to keep some of the characters straight - a few more mentions of their names/relationships would have helped.
But by all means buy it, way better than most of the competition.Read full review

BBC's greatest entertainment achievement. The battle scenes are amazing; ten times better than 1975 W&P. Do not think of watching the second disk without a full box of tissues. Well presented ‘edited’ version of a monumental piece of literature. It is still enjoyable although shortened presentation leaves the story and the characters poorer than they are in the book.

Has a mix of battle, love, poverty, riches, deceit, trust... the mix of it all, the ups and downs can be a bit heavy. Good series tho.
