Great cult movie...so-so film transfer
I love this movie, and saw it when it first came out in theaters in 1986. It's got a popping, very humorous script, with a stand out performance by Richard E. Grant...(I will admit to thinking Paul McGann's is a little overwrought). That does not, however, get in the way of the overall arch and wry humor of the script. My one complaint is a technical one, and it is this: it is obvious that the film transfer onto this disc is sub-par. There are a number of glitches through out the movie that interrupts one from feeling totally immersed in the film. Little things like the film doing slight time jumps to a full on green flash glitch that looks digital in nature. I can only assume that someone got a hold of the source file of the film and produced a fairly HIGH END bootleg copy of Withnail and I, but it STILL feels like a bootleg.
The price is right, and if you've never seen the movie before and you like this sort of stuff, you are in for a very entertaining treat...I just wish who ever the technical supervisor was had picked up on the flaws in the quality control and had done a better job.Read full review
