I needed it
I bought a used boat that only had a manual bilge pump.. The sum was a Johnson Pump so the Automatic Switch slips right onto a clip on the existing pump. I had to do a modification raise the switch higher in the bilge area so the switch would reset itself. Otherwise I would have given it 5 starsRead full review

Reliable, but only for a few weeks. After that, you're on your own...
I loved the simplicity of this bilge pump switch and had hopes that in my application where it simply turns a well pump in fresh water off and on every 25 minutes, that it would last reasonably well.
It lasted barely six weeks. In that time, to begin with, it was as regular as clockwork, you could time it to the minute when it turned the pump on and off.
After four weeks it got stuck in the 'on' position. Fortunately I have an LED marine light that lights up when the well is pumping, so I could see that it was running longer than the usual 2.5 minutes. A day or two later the light remained off. I pulled the well equipment and glued a fishing float to the top of the switch to add a little weight and buoyancy.
It worked a treat, back to working as regular as a metronome. Then it quit again after a few days. By my calculations it actuated on and off a little less than 2500 times. That simply isn't good enough. The crappy one I had fitted previously managed to run well twice that time (it also needed the fishing float glued to it for it to be reliable).
If I had an expensive boat in the water and was relying on this switch to keep it pumped out and dry, I'd be seriously worried. It's not worth two knobs of doggie doo doo. I guess I'll try an Attwood one next.Read full review

Great dependable product
Johnson has always been top quality. I've had trouble with other brands but never Johnson.

Simple and works well
I bought this to replace an identical float switch in my boat that had finally failed after 20 years of saltwater use. Hopefully this new one is made as well as the old one, but if it lasts only half as long it will still be a good value.Read full review

My worries of float switch failure are over..
Have had several previous failures with other float switches.. float switches full up and no contact. For some reason the steel ball was not hitting the switch and activating the bilge motor. In calm water the ball has to hit the switch the first try.
I noticed this unit has a narrow point and I believe that will control the ball roll and activating the switch,
At these prices and because of previous failures I installed two in parallel. Great peace of mind. The wire appears to be high quality tinned wire..more peace of mind.
